The Cost of Sanctuary

About this book

After the death of her husband, Kimberly travels to Mexico hoping to escape the memories of the life they shared. She plans to spend a few quiet weeks in a colorful beach town, far from the sailboats, hospitals, and painful reminders she left behind. Instead, she finds herself drawn into a close-knit community fighting to protect turtle sanctuary beaches from a powerful development company. Construction threatens the nesting grounds where sea turtles have returned for generations, and those who stand in the developers' way face intimidation, corruption, and violence. When Kimberly's friend is abducted, she must confront the grief and fear that have controlled her life. Drawing on sailing skills she thought she had abandoned forever, she joins a dangerous nighttime rescue that takes her from the beach town's shadowed streets to the open sea. Set against vivid descriptions of a Mexican beach town, The Cost of Sanctuary blends women's fiction, environmental suspense, and thriller elements in a story about friendship, courage, and finding purpose after devastating loss. Written for mature readers who enjoy compelling female characters, atmospheric settings, coastal communities, and stories of ordinary people standing up to powerful interests, this novel asks a difficult question: What are we willing to risk to protect the people and places we love?
